Understanding Car Insurance Coverage

An auto insurance policy is comprised of several different kinds of coverage.  Requirements for coverage vary by state and if you are financing a car, your lender may also have requirements for coverage.  There are four primary types of insurance coverage:

  • Liability - insurance for property damage and injuries to others caused by you while operating your vehicle.
  • Medical - coverage for the driver and occupants of the insured vehicle.
  • Collision - insures the owner from loss during a collision with another vehicle or object such as a guardrail or tree.
  • Comprehensive - protection from damage caused by things other than vehicle collision such as fire, theft, hail, vandalism or hitting an animal.

Collision and Comprehensive are intended to protect you for damage to your vehicle and neither coverage applies to the other vehciles involved in an accident.  Liaiblity addresses coverage to others involved in an accident caused by you.

Columbia River Insurance offers an array of other coverages for specific vehicle needs including antique automobiles, classic and high performance cars as well as extended coverage offerings such as Uninsured Motorist, Underinsured Motorist, Personal Injury Protection, Rental Reimbursement, Loss of Use or Towing & Roadside service.  Learn more about these specialty coverages.

Risks of Buying Auto Insurance Online

Shopping for insurance online may be a great way to get information and rough quotes, but there are drawbacks to actually buying your auto coverage that way. One of the drawbacks with buying car insurance online is that it may not match your needs. Many people go looking for instant online insurance, only to find that it is difficult to know whether it offers the right amount and type of protection. Buying a no-frills basic car insurance policy may meet state requirements, but may not provide the compensation you need to recover from an accident.

It is important to discuss your risks and coverage options with a qualified insurance agent who can help ensure that you don't have coverage gaps. Columbia River Insurance can help you learn everything you need to know to make an informed decision about your car insurance and provide quotes from multiple carriers to find a cost effective solution.
